Beautiful Plaster Horseman
I don't know anything about the statue but this is a Victorian photograph of a beautiful piece of sculpture. Knowing the well-informed and artistic bunch that you are, I'm certain someone will be in touch to let me know what it is and where it can be found today... ;-)
UPDATE: And indeed, MichaelH has kindly IDed the statue in the comments section of this post.

It is a plaster of The Löwenkämpfer, or Lion-Fighter, by Albert Wolff (1814-92), originally modelled in 1858, I think. The prime version in bronze is outside the Altes Museum in Berlin. There is also a cast in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Michael,
You are a gentleman. So many thanks for taking the time and trouble to help us out here with an ID for the statue. I ammend the post accordingly to make sure he is not described as marble(!) I've had a look at some of the photos online of the bronze version and it seems a mighty powerful thing.
Thanks again,
Callum
