Isn't our small world amazing. On Monday morning these photographs were in Japan. This morning they were posted through my letterbox in Portsmouth in the UK! Along with a number of other Japanese cartes-de-visite. One of the most amazing things about the small bundle is the realisation that even back as far as the end of the nineteenth century, when these photos were taken, the world was sufficiently international for the CDV format to have taken root in every corner of it. Apart from the strange characters and exotically dressed people, many of the photos in this lot are indistinguishable in style from a CDV photo that might have been taken in a beach-front studio in Brighton, or a swanky New York photographers at the same date.
